The mesothelioma develops in the mesothelial cells, which is to the cells that form the protective membrane covering most of the internal organs of the body. This membrane, called the mesothelium, actually comprises two distinct parts. The inner layer (visceral) envelope organs such as the lungs, heart and stomach, and is itself surrounded by an outer layer (parietal) forming a kind bag. The mesothelium produces a fluid that fills the gap between the two layers and facilitates the movement of bodies. The mesothelium has different names depending on the location of the body where it is located.
The pleural is the mesothelial membrane that protects the lungs. Between the inner layer of the pleura covering the lungs and the outer layer lining the inner wall of the chest, there is a space called the pleura cavity, pleura fluid filled. This fluid allows the two parts of the pleural to slide against one another during respiration.
The peritoneum is the mesothelial membrane that protects the organs in the abdomen, including liver, stomach and intestines. The inner layer covers the abdominal organs, while the outer layer lines the abdominal wall. Again, a liquid (called peritoneal) fills the space between the two layers and allows organs to move smoothly inside the abdomen.The pleural is the mesothelial membrane that protects the lungs. Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer that usually develops in the pleura or peritoneum.
-Pleural mesothelioma starts in the pleural. (It is sometimes called, incorrectly, lung cancer.) As cancer cells multiply, the membranes thicken and put pressure on the lung. It can also be an accumulation of fluid between the two parts of the pleura, that is to say a pleural effusion. The changes undergone by the pleura or pleural fluid may interfere with breathing.
-Peritoneal mesothelioma originates in the peritoneum and causes thickening of membranes. Fluid may collect in the cavity (called ascites), which has the effect of distending the abdomen.
